Alpacas?
"Alpacas? what's an
Alpaca?" is the response we hear when I mention my wife and I
have a small farm. The people I work with usually give me a groan
or a
sigh, or maybe even an "hmmmm, interesting"... but usually look
at me like
I'm crazy, but sometimes the same people come to me later showing
interest after looking up some info on there own, still others will ask
me weeks later, "you still farmin' them Emus", I just answer, "not
any more, now I farm Alpacas." (don't understand how/why
people always mix up Emus and Alpacas, I've never had an Emu.) |

The
Past
We originally
built our barn for 2 horses, when the Horses moved to our
in-laws, we got goats. Goats were loads of fun, but once the
llamas came into the picture, we realized that there
was quite a large language barrier. At grain time, the llamas
would spit at the goats, and the Goats would bunt the llamas, neither
one seemed to understand the other. Our first llamas were a pair
of
geldings that were given to us, they had fiber like brillo pads and
could be used for a dog bed at best, but one thing led to another, we
now have lots of both
llamas and Alpacas.

'Honey, Look
at this....aren't they cute?'
"Honey, Look
at this...aren't they cute?",.....
'cute? We've got 12 goats in the meadow and they're all 'cute'.'' I
grumbled to myself, my head was deep in the 'fridge searching for
refreshment when she exclaimed, "look at this commercial"
certainly I wasn't the only Husband that humored his wife, "very
cute" I answered, "too bad there's no farms in our area, we
could start our own Alpaca ranch." I smirked, not
knowing that ILoveAlpacas.com
would be my down fall.

True Believer
I hate to write this as I know my wife will
remind me of this fact
each time she shows me a picture of her next prospective buy, but
alpacas really are the best livestock we have ever invested in, they
are easy to manage, (Don't get me wrong, it's still work) their fiber
is incredible, and it nice to see them grazing in the meadow as
the cria run, jump and play. Our 3 girls are taking to them very
well, our 4
yr. old daughter loves to grain them, (too much) and they of course
love her for it

Now
Working for a
large corporation has taught me many things, for one, I am
replaceable, working hard no longer guarantee a career or a job, But
now... working at home...does have some guarantees, like a feeling of
satisfaction and fulfillment not acquired at work. When I have
beaten my head against the wall at work and come home wondering if what
I did mattered, Well, maybe it doesn't, but I always go to work knowing
what I did at home did.....
